Cinnamon Sugar Donut Muffin

On our road trip from Seattle to California we made a lot of detours to local bakeries and donut shops. One bakery we made a point to visit was the Downtown Bakery and Creamery in Healdsburg, California. Healdsberg is a quaint little town 70 miles north of San Francisco filled with little shops and restaurants, I highly recommend a visit if your ever in the area. We heard about Downtown Bakery's donut muffin from Food Networks "The Best Thing I Ever Ate - Snack Attack" show. Candace Nelson the founder of Sprinkles Cupcakes loved their donut muffin so much, she created a cupcake in tribute to the donut muffin. The Sprinkles version is basically a cupcake with cinnamon sugar, not exactly the same thing. Personally, I would like to eat the donut muffin whenever I want without having to drive over 400 miles to Healdsberg and Sprinkles isn't going to cut it, especially at $3.25 a cupcake. Luckily my wife found a recipe in The Pioneer Woman Cookbook for a French Breakfast Puff, which is exactly the same thing as the donut muffin. The only change I made to the recipe was to add a little bit more cinnamon.

Not So Mongolian Beef

Mongolian Beef has no connection with traditional Mongolian cuisines but that doesn't stop us from eating this Chinese-American creation. The term Mongolian is meant to imply the food is "exotic". Nevertheless, the dish is tasty and very simple to re-create at home. You may have a harder time convincing your family it's not take out. Now consider this our version of Mongolian Beef, if you are a purist omit the vegetables and add chopped green onions at the end.

Beef Tamales

What happens when you leave two guys at home with nothing to do? Let's hope nothing dangerous! In my case, we made Beef Tamales. Let me rephrase that, a shit load of Beef Tamales. Not including the shopping we did the day before, my friend Shahay and I spent 15 consecutive hours in the kitchen making these delicious Beef Tamales. I do admit that between the cooking times we played a few games of Modern Warfare 2, so it wasn't all work and no fun. Best of all I had the opportunity to prove to my wife, who doubted my ability, that even a noob like myself can make awesome Beef Tamales. I knew it was sweet victory when she ate her words after taking her first bite and admitting the Tamales rocked.

Cinnamon Sugar Donut Holes

Lately, I have been jonesing to make some donuts and putting my new fryer to good use. The extended fourth of July weekend gave me the opportunity to spend some time in the kitchen working with hot oil. Being a little too impatient to make traditional donuts that require yeast to rise, I opted for these quick and easy donut holes. No yeast required and no standby time. Just mix and fry to enjoy some cinnamon sugar donut holes. But mark my words, this isn't going to be the last of the donut recipes on MvsK. I am still looking forward to making the traditional donut. Until that day comes, enjoy these bite size cinnamon sugar donut holes.

Beer Battered Fries

The first time I had Beer Battered Fries, was at a bar/restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA. After an interview in Irvine, I met up with my friend Set and Gary for lunch. Set took us to this place for the sole purpose of trying their Beer Battered Fries. I still remember this day like it was yesterday. In fact this was in July of 2001, exactly 9 years ago. With a little help from Google I found the restaurant and sure enough they still have Beer Battered Fries on the menu, the place is called Huntington Beach Beer Company. Now I can't remember how the food was, but I can say that I don't see Beer Battered Fries on menus very often. This Beer Battered Fries Recipe isn't the same as the one they have at HB Beer Company but it is good. Choosing the type of beer you use in your batter makes this recipe personal to each individual. What type of beer would you use? Check the comment section to see what I used.

Man Burger with Chipotle Mayonnaise

The Man Burger idea came from watching Alton Brown cook up his mini man burgers in Good Eats. Sliders are great for appetizers but what you really need is a full size man burger. We took Alton's creation and super-sized it and made it for real men. Topping it off with a little chipotle mayo helps bring out the spicy flavor that brings every man to tears.

Chipotle Mayo

Chipotle Peppers are a great way to spice up Mayo. Since it only take a handful of ingredients to make Chipotle Mayo, I recommend it for almost everything. Chipotle Mayo will go great on burgers, sandwiches, and our perfect french fries.

Simple Chocolatey Chocolate Croissant

The history of the Croissant is as flakey as its delicious crust. Stories of its origin date back to the 8th century. One story states that the Croissant was invented in Vienna, Austria in 1683 to celebrate the defeat of the Turks, in reference to the crescent on the Turkish flag. Until today, I never thought war had an influence on culinary creations. Join us in adding chocolate to history and enjoying the taste of victory, so to speak.
