Spicy Smoked Mozzarella Meatballs and Spaghetti Spicy Smoked Mozzarella Meatballs and Spaghetti John Baghoyan

The worlds largest meatball weighed 222.5 lbs. That may be one hell of a challenge to eat for any man, but I assure you it won't taste as good as this spicy smoked mozzarella meatball. If your craving some Italian this mouth watering meatball is one that you should eat. If you end up with leftovers you can toss the meatballs in Italian rolls and cover them with the marinara to make a delicious meatball sub.

Be sure to try this with the Tomato and Basil Bruschetta.

Marinara Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Garlic Clove, finely chopped
  • 1 Celery Stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 Carrot, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 (32oz) can Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 Dried Bay Leaf
  • 5 Fresh Basil Leaves


Marinara Sauce Directions

1. In a large pot, heat the extra-virgin olive oil over medium-high heat.
2. Test oil for sizzle by adding small piece of onion. When ready add all the onions and garlic, saute until onions are translucent for about 10 minutes.
3. Add the celery, carrots, salt and pepper. Saute until all the vegetables are soft for about 10 minutes.
4. Add the canned tomatoes, bay leaf, and basil leaves.
5. Mix gently and let simmer uncovered over low heat until the sauce thickens for about 1 hour.
6. Remove and discard bay leaf only. Season sauce with salt and pepper, to taste.

(Sauce can be made 1 day ahead. Cool, then cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat before using.)

Meatball Ingredients

  • 1 small Onion, grated
  • 1/2 cup Fresh Flat-Leaf Parsley, chopped
  • 2/3 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
  • 1/3 cup Italian-Style Bread Crumbs
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 2 tsp Ketchup
  • 3 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1/4 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 8 ounces Ground Beef
  • 8 ounces Ground Pork
  • 2 ounces Smoked Mozzarella Cheese, cut into 16 pieces (1/2-inch cubes)


Meatball Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 400° F
2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper
3. In a large bowl, combine the onion, parsley, Parmesan, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
4. Add the ground beef and pork
5. Using hands, combine all ingredients gently but thoroughly. (Being gentle is important, this helps keep the meatball soft and juicy)
6. Shape the meat mixture into 16 (1.5-inch diameter) meatballs and place on the prepared baking sheet. (Be Gentle)
7. Make a hole in the center of your meatball and place  a cube of mozzarella inside.
8. Reform your meatball so that the mozzarella is covered.
9. Bake meatballs for 30 minutes until cooked through.

Pasta Instructions


  • 1 lb of Long Pasta
  • 1/2 tsp salt

1. Fill large pot of water and add salt
2. Bring to a boil over high heat
3. Add pasta and stir occasionally
4. Boil for 8-10 minutes
5. Drain and place in large serving bowl
